EVENDALE COUNCIL RECREATION, FIRE AND POLICE COMMITTEE MEETING
September 2, 2014, 6:00 pm
In attendance were council members John Ranz, Bill Puthoff, and Jeff Albrinck. Also in attendance were Police Chief Niel Korte, Fire Chief Mike Hauck, and Recreation Director David Nichols, and Evendale CFO Cynthia Caracci.
Recreation
- Recreation Director, Mr. Nichols, reported that the repairs to the indoor spa will be completed prior to the change in weather and increase the usage of the indoor spa.
- The lightning detection unit should be installed sometime in September. The final cost was approximately $12,000. Mr. Nichols has coordinated training with Chief Hauck and the Fire Department.
- Mr. Nichols further reported that Kim Pielage will be adding Adult Services to her responsibilities and that they will be hiring a new part-time Rec Specialist 3.
Police Department
- Sam Ivanovich will be sworn in at the September council meeting as the newest member of the Evendale Police Department. Recognizing that the members within the Police Department have been reduced over the years and with the anticipation that another Officer may be leaving the department early next year, the committee approved extending an additional offer to another candidate that will be effective in December. This eliminates the expense and time of going through another hiring process in a few months.
- Chief Korte reported that he has been unable to dispose of many of the old accessories that are designed to fit only the Crown Victoria’s which are no longer in use. Chief Korte has explored the sale of these parts and although they still function, he has found no interests. It was recommended that he look into simply scrapping the materials.
Fire Department
- Chief Hauck raised concern about the mandatory retirement age of 60 and feels that it is more appropriate that the determination be based upon fitness and physical ability and not an arbitrary age. The committee agrees with his position, as it unnecessarily exposes the village to potential age discrimination. Chief Hauck will discuss this matter with Village Solicitor, Tim Burke, and prepare an Ordinance for consideration.
- On Friday, August 22, 2014, at approximately 11:36, the Fire Department was dispatched to an explosion at Bunge, North America on East Sharon Rd. Over the next 3 days the Evendale Fire Dept. spent approximately 450 man hours fighting the initial explosion and the subsequent fires in the grain storage silos. The severity of the explosion and subsequent fire, in conjunction with the temperature in the nineties with high humidity necessitated the assistance of numerous communities. The Village of Evendale would like to thank the departments from Sharonville; Reading; Woodlawn; Sycamore; Loveland; Wyoming; Lockland; Springdale; Dear Park Silverton; Montgomery Glendale; Blue Ash, West Chester; Golf Manor; Forest Park; and Springfield Township for their contribution and assistance in battling this fire. I would also like to thank Steve Berke and Cincinnati Sub Zero for providing portable cooling vests.
- Chief Hauck reported that Sutphen is inspecting the failed ladder units before determining any action on other units. Once they fully understand the cause of the failed apparatus, it is Chief Hauck’s hope that we will be one of the first communities to have our ladder truck repaired or replaced.
- Chief Hauck further reported that the new ambulance will be arrive sometime in November, at which time the department will go through the normal training on the new unit.
On motion by John Ranz and seconded by Bill Puthoff, the meeting adjoined at 6:45
